It's the experience of unbounded freedom and joy, as described by Sue Austin that really moved me. The wheelchair brings her freedom and is her best friend. If all wheelchair users thought this way the fear of limitations and being bound in would be eliminated.

Dick and Rick Hoyt, the most inspirational father and son team have raced in the Ironman Triathlon, many times.

Or as I'd like to call it, "OT Jargon".  The first time many OT's open their first client chart, they become cross-eyed. I've come across at least 3 different ways to abbreviate the word "independent" and have written progress notes and discharge summaries ad nauseum.  There are all sorts of abbreviations and symbols never seen before. It takes a lot of time to get used to but at the end you too can became familiar with "c/o, CBR, CXR, EOM, LOS..." and many more commonly used acronyms.  Some time ago, I figured I should start making a list of all the symbols, abbreviations, and acronyms that I have come across and others that I might see in the future. Over the course of a few months and with the help of the Quick Reference Dictionary for Occupational Therapists by Karen Jacobs, EdD, OTR/L, CDE, FAOTA, I have compiled a list of useful terminology that might be beneficial to OT students, OTAs, OTRs,  and even PTs.

Studying for the NBCOT

I am a licensed and registered Occupational Therapist. That rings music to my ears. How wonderful it feels to say that yes, I am a licensed therapist. The licensure didn't come easy though. It was months of hard work and lots and lots of studying to get to the point that I was able to pass the dreaded NBCOT exam. From all the months spent studying, reading all the books, online forums, doing practice exams, biting my nails and losing hair, I've learned a thing or two on how to effectively study for the exam, which at least worked for me. Now, generally if you've just graduated from OT school, I would say to pick up whatever study book you have and start reading. The sooner you take the exam after you graduate, the more easy it will be to recall and retain information, especially since you're still in the studying mindset.
